The Eastern Visayas State University–Burauen Campus (EVSU-BC), through its Income-Generating Project (IGP), cultivated approximately 2.4 hectares of rice land in Calendar Year 2025, demonstrating the University’s commitment to agricultural productivity, responsible land use, and food production.

The project covered key operations from land preparation and seedling establishment to transplanting, crop maintenance, and harvesting. The work put university-managed agricultural land to productive use and supported the production of rice, a staple food for Filipino households.

The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15): Life on Land, particularly the sustainable management of land and soil resources. It provides a platform for promoting sound farming practices—such as appropriate water management, responsible fertilizer use, integrated pest management, and efficient use of farm inputs—that can help maintain soil productivity and reduce avoidable environmental impacts.

The project is consistent with Republic Act No. 8435, or the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act of 1997, which supports agricultural development, food security, and modernization. It also relates to Republic Act No. 10601, or the Agricultural and Fisheries Mechanization Law, which promotes appropriate machinery and technology to improve farm productivity and operational efficiency.

Beyond its income-generating role, the rice area offers opportunities to support EVSU’s functions in instruction, research, extension, and production. It can serve as a practical learning and demonstration site, while production records can help the University assess farm performance, costs and returns, and opportunities for continuous improvement.

Through the cultivation of 2.4 hectares, EVSU–Burauen Campus underscores the value of productive agricultural land, responsible resource management, and sustainable food production. The project contributes to the University’s agricultural development efforts and supports national food-security priorities, while advancing the principles of SDG 15.
